Chapter Ten

The next day, she sat in the doctor’s office. She should’ve listened to the warning bells in her head.

The door opened, and a nice older gentleman stepped in.

“Miss Peters?”

“Yes.” She fingered the cloth gown.

“I’m Dr. Anthony. You’re here for a physical.”

She could only nod.

“Well, Sebastian suggested it might’ve been a while since you had a physical…”

“I can’t remember the last time I had one.” She almost never got sick so didn’t frequent the doctor’s office. Aside from a nasty bout of pneumonia last year, she could report she was healthy.

“So we’ll do a full exam. When was your last pelvic exam and pap smear?”

“Um…never?”

“That’s not what I want to hear. Let’s get started.”

The first part of the exam was normal. Dr. Anthony poked and prodded, asked questions, and made inarticulate sounds in response.

When he had Tarah lie with her feet in the stirrups, though, the nerves set in. “Is this really necessary? I mean, I’m healthy…”

A long silence.

Tarah’s face flamed.

“Is Sebastian aware of this?”

Staring up at the ceiling, she swallowed convulsively, wishing the floor would swallow her up. “What do you think?” Had she injected enough sarcasm? A sudden thought occurred to her, and she bolted upright. “And you can’t tell him, right? I mean patient confidentiality and all that.”

The doctor nodded. “But even if Sebastian wasn’t the most incisive man I know, I’d still say he’d notice this.”

“Can we pretend this never happened?”

He raised an eyebrow. “Odd turn of phrase, but okay. I’ll order the standard blood and urine tests including an STI panel.”

“STI?”

“Sexually transmitted infections.”

“Oh.”

He cleared his throat. “You should know Sebastian is having all the same tests today. Well, obviously not the pelvic exam.”

“Obviously.” Her voice dripped with cynicism. “Just give me the paperwork.”

After they had their blood drawn, Sebastian suggested a light lunch. Once they were settled and he ordered for both of them, he met her gaze directly.

“What’s wrong, Tarah? You’ve been acting strangely since we left Anthony’s office. Did something happen?”

“What if I wasn’t completely up front and honest with you?”

“Did you lie to me?”

“Not so much of a lie. Maybe an omission?” She was hedging, but this was much harder than she’d imagined.

“Look, if this has to do with your past, I don’t care. We’ll both get our blood test results, and we can take this relationship to the next level.”

She squirmed in her seat. Maybe telling the truth here, in public, was the best course of action. He couldn’t get too angry, right? “What if I told you I already know what the results will be?”

“Well, I’d say…” His voice trailed off, then he clearly regrouped and leaned forward to afford them some privacy. “The only way to be one hundred percent sure you’re clean is if you’ve never engaged in any sexual activity. None.” His eyes narrowed. “Is that what you’re telling me?”

She closed her eyes to break the contact, knowing the answer was written all over her face.
